Learning Road Safety with Space Worm and School TV
School TV and the Department of Transport have embarked on an exciting and informative series of inserts to bring the message of road safety to young children on School TV.
Each of the 2 minute inserts is hosted by the Pezoolie Space Worm. Space Worm finds himself, along with his learner friends, in a potentially life threatening situation, from simply walking on the pavement to trying to cross a freeway. But help is always close at hand in the form of Joshua Raborifi and friends from the National Department of Transport.
With careful and encouraging guidance from "Bra Josh", Space Worm and the children learn to safely negotiate their way around South African roads, to steer clear of dangerous situations and to always Arrive Alive.
These inserts offer road safety rules that our viewers can learn from and practical tips and techniques that are easy to remember and presented in a fun and interesting way.
Key phrases are repeated throughout the series, such as, "Stop saves lives", "Stop look and listen", "If you can't see the traffic, the traffic can't see you" and "Look right, left and right again and only cross when it is safe to do so".
Topics covered, include, but are not limited to, being safe on the pavement, crossing a road at a stop street, pedestrian crossing, pedestrian robot, scholar patrol crossing and from between parked cars, as well as the dangers of a freeway and being visible on the roads at night.
Watch out for the road safety inserts every weekday, on SABC 1 during School TV from 06h00-07h00, on SABC 2 during School TV from 09h30 - 11h00 and on SABC 2 in the afternoons
